Grace Darling: Victorian heroine.
Grace Darling lived a quiet and anonymous life in the Longstone lighthouse on the Farne Islands near Bamburgh on the rugged Northumberland coast. In the early hours of September 7th 1838 Grace watched from the lighthouse as the SS Forfarshire was wrecked on Harcar Rocks during a violent storm. Nine survivors escaped in a lifeboat, nine others clung precariously to the rocks as the storm raged, about forty souls perished in the raging seas including the ships captain. Grace aged 22 years and her father the lighthouse keeper aged 52 years risked their own lives to row out in a small boat to save the four crewmen and five passengers who were praying for salvation. They got them to the lighthouse where they remained for several days until the storms subsided. When the news broke of the daring rescue Grace became a national celebrity, artists clamoured to paint her portrait, William Wordsworth committed her deed to verse, even Queen Victoria wrote to her. Sadly Grace died only four years later of tuberculosis.
